From Limos to Flowers: 8 Dos and Don'ts for a Summer Wedding in NYC
By John Erbis
Planning a summer wedding in New York? According to TheKnot.com, 13% of weddings take place in June, which makes it the second most popular month for weddings. 10% of weddings take place in July (5th popular month) and 11.5% of weddings take place in August (4th popular month). There are a lot of reasons why throwing a summer wedding is great. The warm weather makes it ideal for an outdoor wedding, there a variety of beautiful flowers in bloom and out-of-town guests have an easier time traveling to the wedding and are usually able to easily get a few vacation days off since summer is when most people take time off work. However, like most things, summer weddings do have a few downsides. To help avoid any possible pitfalls, here's a list of New York summer wedding Dos and Don'ts, dealing with everything from the limousine service to how to keep everyone from overheating during the ceremony.
1. Do choose lighter clothing. A bride deserves to feel comfortable and confident on her special day, not hot and sticky with her makeup running down her face. For the wedding dress, choose a light fabric that breathes, like silk. Many brides today are choosing dresses with shorter skirts. This is a great idea for an outdoor wedding. A summer wedding should have a relaxed, breezy feel. The groom can wear a light linen suit and nice leather sandals. If your wedding is on a beach it should be even more casual, a special white sun dress for the bride with khakis and a button-down for the groom.
2. Don't forget the save-the-dates. Remember, summer is when many people choose to take vacations, especially families with kids in school. Make sure to send out save-the-date announcements far enough in advance to make sure everyone you want to attend your wedding will be able to.
3. Do provide shade or A/C for outdoor weddings. An outdoor ceremony with the sun beating down can be extremely uncomfortable for your guests, especially when they are all sitting right next to one another, unable to get up from their seats. Avoid making your guests suffer from heat stroke by making sure you pick an outdoor venue with some shade or air conditioning. Some tent rentals include portable air-conditioning units. It's also a good idea to let guests know the dress code if it is going to be more casual than a normal wedding. Suits are very hot for men, and if the groom is going to be wearing a more casual version, make sure to somehow note on the invitations that your male guests should forgo the heavy suit. Make sure to have decorative baskets or tubs filled with ice and bottled water scattered throughout the ceremony site for guests and vendors.
4. Don't forget about protecting yourself from sun and bugs before the ceremony. This is a must if you are having an outdoor wedding. Make sure you, the groom and the bridal party all apply sunscreen before the ceremony. You and your bridesmaids can wear a moisturizer or foundation that has SPF. For guests, include a decorative basket with sunscreen wipes and bug spray for guests to use. Once it gets dark out, the mosquitoes come out to play. Ward off bugs with citronella candles and bug spray. Sunburn and bug bites won't make for great wedding pictures, so make sure to avoid the sun prior to the wedding as well and opt for a spray tan rather than burning yourself in a tanning bed.
5. Do remember to book your superior New York wedding limos early. Summer weddings are very popular and as stated above, June is the second most popular month for weddings. To ensure you get the dream limousine you want for your wedding, make sure to book early. For an intimate and romantic experience, reserve a vintage Rolls Royce wedding limo for just for you and the groom.
6. Don't schedule your outdoor wedding to begin in the afternoon. Midday is when the sun is at its strongest, and hot and sweaty guests will get cranky. It's also hard to enjoy a meal and adult beverages during the day when you're overheating. The best plan is to schedule dinner time for sunset and then work the rest of the wedding plans around dinner.
7. Do serve a light meal. Nobody wants to eat heavy food on a hot summer day. Instead, choose a menu that's appropriate with the season. Include grilled entrees and fresh fruits and vegetables. For dessert consider fruit pies and tarts instead of cake that could melt in the heat. Frozen cocktails with mint, cucumber or watermelon will cool off guests and look festive for the event.
8. Don't choose flowers that will wilt in the heat. Choose hearty flowers with a waxy texture such as Hawaiian blooms like orchids. Ginger halcyons, birds-of-paradise, and tiger lilies will survive the heat as well. Some brides choose water-submerged flower centerpieces featuring orchids. These keep cool underwater all day so wilting is not an issue.
Following these tips will help you plan the best summer wedding possible and stop any potential problems before they arise. Remember to plan ahead to avoid unnecessary stress and after your wedding you'll see why so many others choose the summer months for theirs.among the most fascinating and fun New
York getaways.
